The Hebrew Home at Riverdale is pleased to announce its next exhibition Richard Heinrich: Sculpture which features small-scale works in metal as well as works on paper. The sculptures in bronze and steel represent a survey of the last 16 years of the artist’s career.
Working in the modernist tradition, Heinrich creates abstract sculpture that focuses on materials, weight and forms in space. These tabletop sculptures are strong, dynamic and architectural in spirit. Many of the pieces are forged and welded steel, and some are cast bronze. All have a rich, velvety surface that belies their actual density. Heinrich generally works in a vertical format, and the overall composition relates indirectly to the human form. His drawings are black and white, and also reductive – there is nothing extraneous or over worked. He states: “ I take beautiful but inanimate substances… and, hopefully, give them a new life beyond their structural chemistry. ”
Richard Heinrich, a graduate of Cornell University, has been working in metal for over 35 years. His work has been exhibited in galleries across the United States and is held in notable public collections such as the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Museum at Rutgers University, New York Public Library, and Grounds for Sculpture, Hamilton New Jersey. He currently lives and works in New York City.
The exhibit will be on view from January 21 – February 25, 2007 where it is open to the public free of charge from 10 – 4 pm daily. The opening reception will be held on Sunday, January 21 from 1:30 – 3 pm.
