The holiday season is officially here and with it comes plenty of family time. According to the Department of Transportation, the December holidays are among the busiest travel periods of the year, with long-distance trips rising by 23 percent.

Beyond family bonding, time together during the holidays is an invaluable opportunity to take a closer look at an older relative’s health and wellbeing. Ask yourself: Does he look frail? Has he lost weight? Is she wearing dirty clothing? Does he seem depressed? Since your last visit, an older relative’s physical or emotional health may have declined. And, because the holidays are a period of reflection, sometimes feelings of sadness can surface, especially if the person has experienced a recent loss.
