February 15 - March 15, 2006

February 1, 2006; Riverdale, New York--The Hebrew Home at Riverdale is pleased to announce the exhibition Cinematic Stories: Three Young Photographers Jeremiah Dart, Katie Kingma & Dianne Lowry. This exhibition brings together the work of three photographers, each a recent graduate from the School of Visual Arts in New York City, who has been strongly influenced by film and use photographs to tell their own, often enigmatic stories. Creating scenarios by using family members, friends and actors, these artists create images that suggest a narrative, and play with reality and fantasy. Common themes of personal identity, role-playing, and storytelling, are at the essence of this engaging exhibition.

Jeremiah Dart photographs his family and himself often using the house and property in Connecticut where he grew up as a starting point. Whether he uses an empty barn, a cramped attic space or a beautiful formal living room, his subjects and settings establish tension within the image. The photographs recall the mysterious eerie qualities of film noir. Katie Kingma’s saturated techno colored images also recall vivid early Hitchcock movies, and reference both contemporary fashion layouts and the current state photography. Her psychologically suggestive but carefully staged photographs set up dramatic tableaux. Dianne Lowry grew up in Florida and uses her six siblings as her primary models. Touching both on the innocence and ephemeral nature of childhood, Lowry is unsentimental in her depiction of her subjects. Whether captured in moments of play or repose, their inhibitions and unselfconscious beauty are captured through her lens.
