The Hebrew Home for the Aged at Riverdale is pleased to announce its new exhibition Hermine Ford: Paintings and Works on Paper. A graduate of Antioch College in Ohio, Hermine Ford also studied at the Yale School of Art and Architecture, and has been exhibiting her work since 1974. The exhibition includes her early shaped paintings on canvas, her more recent drawings, and paintings that have not been shown before.
"My paintings are shaped to mimic natural forms and, as such, they float on the wall. The drawings represent a cluster of images scattered across a sheet of paper...The image tends to represent aspects of something like a pond, an island, a whale, a footstep, a pebble, a cell," writes the artist when asked to describe her work. Although formally abstract, the works resonate with allusions to the natural world. Hermine Ford is also
a great colorist, and her imagery often coalesces from fluid improvisations into tight geometric forms reminiscent of Renaissance mosaics made up of sparkling, intense, jewel-like colors.
