Natural Forms: Paintings by Jennifer Weiss

The Hebrew Home at Riverdale is pleased to announce its latest exhibition Natural Forms: Paintings by Jennifer Weiss featuring works comprised of colors and textures extracted from the natural world to create new compositions, connecting the dissimilar modes of abstract and representational art in a meaningful way.

The work uses motifs seen in organic objects ranging from flowers and leaves to peacock feathers and pussy willows. These familiar images are transformed using undercoats and layers of paint, allowing the artist to explore the extraordinary variance of texture and color yielded by the natural environment. The final compositions simplify nature into a distinct aesthetic using incandescent colors and complex patterns which often resemble a sumptuous fabric in their finished states.

Ms. Weiss’s style and sense of color are heavily influenced by travel to places characterized by rich color schemes, such as Italy and the Southwestern United States, as well as changes in light and the darkening of plants during seasonal transitions. She writes in her artist statement: “A bit of softening or blurriness in my brush stroke is occurring, a reference to the preciousness of time.” The close relationship between the paintings’ color palettes and variations in the natural environment ruminate on the effects of time and change.

Jennifer Weiss is a graduate of Pennsylvania State University and has studied art and design in NYC at noted institutions such as the Art Students League and Fashion Institute of Technology. Her work has been featured in group and solo exhibitions throughout the United States, and is held in various private collections. The exhibition will be on display from January 30 – March 23, 2008, open daily from 10am – 4pm.

As a member of the American Association of Museums, the Home is committed to exhibiting contemporary and modern works of art. The Hebrew Home at Riverdale, which houses a collection of 20th century art, is a nonprofit, non-sectarian geriatric center serving more than 3,000 elderly persons through its resources and community service programs. Its 19-acre main campus overlooks the Hudson River at 5901 Palisade Avenue in Riverdale.
