Every corner in Riverdale seems to be putting up a new building these days and it’s nearly impossible to drive more than a few blocks without coming across a construction wall. Yet, at The Hebrew Home for the Aged at Riverdale, even a construction wall is turned into beautiful artwork for everyone to enjoy.

Rather than looking at an unsightly, temporary wall in front of the construction site of the newest pavilion, Hebrew Home curator Susan Putterman decided to turn the wall into a piece of art. To that end, she brought in artist Becket Bowes to create a 40-foot long mural incorporating photographs of members of the Home’s community and brilliant color. Inspired by a Rembrandt landscape, the result is a vibrant, enticing world that is both gorgeous and quirkily real.

Becket Bowes is an artist who was born and raised in Colorado. He will receive his Masters of Fine Arts in Painting from Hunter College in 2005. His work has appeared in several galleries and institutions including The Cleveland Institute of Art, Ohio; 473 Gallery, New York; The Swiss Institute, New York; Sara Melzer Gallery, New York; and Instituto D'Medici, Florence, Italy. His fellow artist and assistant on the project was Sasha Mann, a senior at Mamaroneck High School.

The mural will be on view through November 10, 2004. It can be seen in the Resnick Pavilion 1st Floor Lounge, where it is open to the public, daily from 10 am – 4 pm, free of charge.
