Destination Holy Land: Souvenirs & Memorabilia from Israel The Judaica Museum of the Hebrew Home at Riverdale is pleased to announce its latest exhibition Destination Holy Land: Souvenirs & Memorabilia from Israel focusing on souvenirs produced between 1920 and 1975 which were brought back from Israel by tourists. The show features objects embellished with iconic images of the Western Wall, the Tomb of Rachel, and the seven-branched menorah, as well as artifacts documenting Israel’s progression to statehood. Objects from this period, including cigarette boxes, candlesticks, plates, and wine glasses, which were made for tourists, became imbued with the more meaningful experience of visiting and supporting Israel. Also on view are photographic reproductions which chronicle Israel in its infancy as a state and examine its formation as a Jewish homeland. The objects explore the unlikely union of the sacred and commercial, the line between tourist destination and religious holy site, and reveal how one seemingly incongruous concept can greatly impact another. This exhibit focuses on the complexities of visiting Israel where, to quote New York Times columnist and Pulitzer Prize winner Thomas L. Friedman, “everything is about itself and something else.” The exhibit will be on view August 17 – October 6, 2007 where it is open to the public free of charge, Monday – Friday from 10:30am – 4:30pm. The Judaica Museum, located on the fifth floor of RiverWalk, is on the campus of The Hebrew Home at Riverdale located on Palisade Avenue in Riverdale, NY. Parking is available on the premises. As a member of the American Association of Museums, the Home is committed to exhibiting contemporary and modern works of art. The Hebrew Home at Riverdale, which also houses a collection of 20 th century art, is a nonprofit, non-sectarian geriatric center serving more than 3,000 elderly persons through its resources and community service programs.
