Therapeutic Activities

Enhancing the quality of life in mind, body and spirit is the cornerstone of The Home’s philosophy in each of its facilities and
community programs.

A rich curriculum of creative, educational and cultural activities including classes and workshops in music, art, drama, poetry, cooking, horticulture and pet therapy, together with college level courses at The Hebrew Home University, stimulate the intellect, inspire expression and maximize each person’s potential for self fulfillment.

The Biederman Library and the Lustgarten Computer Learning Center, located in the Joan and Sanford I. Weill Pavilion, help open the world for residents. At the Computer Learning Center residents are trained to use the computer, learn how to e-mail and surf the internet. This has allowed residents to stay in touch with out-of-town family on a regular basis, shop on-line, do research on the web, and play computer games. The workstations include computers with enlarged icons and letters on keyboard for those residents who have low vision.

Trips to museums, concerts, restaurants and shopping areas keep residents actively involved in the life of the larger community. At the Home a wide variety of concerts ranging from jazz to classical music are scheduled every week. In addition, residents participate in a host of interactive games such as “Meeting of the Minds”-a game of intellectual competition similar to Jeopardy. Another regular program is “Travelogue,”--a presentation and slide show given by different guests about travel experiences around the world from China to Africa. Other activities range from an annual fashion show with residents modeling the latest in designer wear to art exhibits throughout the year of residents’ works.
