Since 2000, The Hebrew Home at Riverdale has been offering college level courses taught by faculty members of Sarah Lawrence College. Known as The Hebrew Home University, the classes stimulate the intellect, inspire expression, and maximize each person's potential for self-fulfillment.
Recognizing that students bring a wealth of knowledge and life experiences to the classroom, yet are physically impaired, the teachers challenge their students and help fulfill an intellectual need of our residents. Classes include creative writing, contemporary world politics, conversational Spanish, and Shakespeare. For each session classes meet once a week for eight weeks. The average class size is 10-13 students.
To quote one student at The Hebrew Home University, "I think the public at large should know that when we go to a nursing home, we are not ready to give up. I think it's really wonderful when you think about Sarah Lawrence College, which is a fashionable school, attaching themselves to the Hebrew Home so that we seniors can continue our education."
